  Thallus yellow-grey to olive-grey, greenish or pale orange, thin, smooth; soredia and isidia absent. Apothecia common and scattered, ±rounded or somewhat distorted, sessile, constricted at the base, 0.5–1.5 mm wide; disc brown, brown-black to black, finely pruinose when young, ±plane; margin prominent, glossy, orange to yellow-orange, elevated above the disc when young, becoming partially excluded in older apothecia and level with the disc; disc and margin K+ purple; proper exciple consisting of hyaline radiating agglutinated hyphae; outer layer encrusted with anthraquinone crystals, colourless within. Epihymenium encrusted with golden brown crystals. Hymenium not inspersed, colourless, 90–120 μm thick; hypothecium yellow to pale red-brown. Asci 2–4-spored, 70–90 × 18–30 μm. Ascospores ellipsoidal, submuriform, primarily transversely septate, with 6–10 lens-shaped locules, each with 1–4 vertical septa, 35–70 × 15–22 μm. Conidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecia K+ purple; thallus containing fragilin bisanthrone (minor), ±fragilin (minor), ±parietin (trace); apothecia containing fragilin (major), parietin (major), fragilin bisanthrone (minor), physcoin bisanthrone (minor), ±emodin (trace), ±7-chloro-emodin (trace), ±7-chlorofallacinal (trace), ±7-chloroteloschistin (trace), ±7-chloroparietinic acid (trace).
     
  Common on bark in rainforest and coastal forest in eastern Qld and N.S.W. Also in southern Asia, Africa and North America.
